Rick Ankiel is done with baseball. The former pitcher turned outfielder did not sign with a team this winter.
Ankiel, 34, was believed to be seeking a contract to play in 2014.
Initially, Ankiel came up as a pitcher making 51 appearances – 41 starts. He finished that portion of his career with a 3.90 ERA and 1.36 WHIP from 1999-2004.
After injuries forced him to give up pitching he became an outfielder. He returned to the majors in 2007 and finished his time as a hitter with a .240/.302/.422 line with 76 home runs and 251 RBI. His best season came in 2008 when he hit .264 with 25 home runs and a career best 71 RBI.
