Cubs could deal Jeff Samardzija before season starts?

The rumors about Jeff Samardzija being traded just will not go away. Samardzija and the Chicago Cubs have been unable to work out an extension and many believe that will force the Cubs to trade the right hander in July.

Of course there is no guarantee that Samardzija makes it out of spring training with the Cubs.

Gordon Wittenmyer reported that “Two industry sources said Monday they believe a trade is a strong possibility, although a third source said no such talks are happening.”

Wittenmyer’s report was not surprising, in fact many believe the Cubs would be more than willing to trade the 29-year-old stater even as rumors  have died down in recent weeks.

The Cubs reportedly asked the Atlanta Braves for Jason Heyward in a deal for Samardzija. Unsurprising the Braves cut off trade talks immediately.

In 2013 Samardzija pitched 213 2/3 innings finishing with a 4.34 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. He posted a 214/78 K/BB ratio.
