Yadier Molina will not play the first handful of spring training games for the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Cardinals want to give Molina a break during spring action so he will be healthy for the regular season.

“We’ll probably go a little slow getting him started,” Matheny said, via the St. Louis Dispatch. “We’ve got a long way to go and he looks good. When we start talking about trying to conserve we could do that from the start, do that at the beginning.”

The six-time Gold Glove winner has been a steady presence behind the plate for the Cardinals. He led the National League in innings caught last season.

St. Louis has stressed that there is nothing wrong with Molina, and that he should be able to get more than enough trips to the plate before the season begins.
