Red Sox release pitcher Chris Carpenter

The Boston Red Sox have given pitcher Chris Carpenter his release.

No not that Chris Carpenter. He retired in November.

The 27-year-old Carptner pitched in 18 big league games for the Red Sox between 2011 and 2012 compilining a 1-0 record, 5.17 ERA and a 2.30 WHIP. He appeared in 34 minor league games in 2013. The highlight of his career came as he was part of the compensation package for Theo Epstein when he went to Chicago.

Carpenter is headed to Japan to play for the Yakult Swallows.
