The St. Louis Cardinals have re-signed manager Mike Matheny to a three-year contract extension. Matheny was already locked up through 2013, but now the Cards will have him until 2017.  He owns a 185-139 record over his first two seasons as a big league manager.

Chris Carpenter is retiring from baseball at the age of 38. Carpenter attempted to make a comeback  in early 2013, but had to shut things down again after feeling  numbness in his throwing hand.

Carpenter is a 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner and decided to call it a career with a 144-94 lifetime record to go along with a 3.76 ERA. He is expected to remain with the organization in a yet-to-be announced position.

Carpenter made 10.5 million in 2013 and was set to become a free agent in 2014.
