It has to say something about an athlete, or maybe more so a sport, that even when he is not playing he remains the story.
Alex Rodriguez has not played a single major league game this season and yet he is in more headlines then anyone. Rodriguez made headlines with his conditioning program, his tweet that he was cleared, and the time Brian Cashman told him to shut up.
That was all before he made a single rehab appearance.
Since then Rodriguez has struggled in a game, met with Major League Baseball about his connections to the biogenesis clinic in South Florida, and attempted to skip a minor league game which was ultimately rained out. Rodriguez was on pace to be in the Yankees lineup this week and then he had a setback.
LIFETIME BAN: Rodriguez could get lifetime ban
Now it is unclear if Rodriguez will ever play for the Yankees again.
Though it all we watched, read, and wrote and though it all Alex Rodriguez remained baseball’s biggest story. While we say we want to move past Alex Rodriguez we have not. We will not.
Alex Rodriguez will again make headlines when baseball official announces its punishment for him. He will make headlines with his response. He will make headlines.
The only thing that can end the Alex Rodriguez headlines is the playoffs and even Rodriguez has found ways to disrupt those in the past.
Congratulations Alex Rodriguez you are baseball’s biggest story. Now bow out and let someone else have the headlines.
