The Boston Red Sox optioned pitcher Alfredo Aceves to Triple-A on Wednesday. Aceves had struggled after being moved into the Red Sox rotation for an injured John Lackey.
In 17 2/3 innings of work Aceves had a 8.66 ERA and a 2.09 WHIP. After his latest outing he claimed that the strike zone was too small.
With the demotion of Aceves the Red Sox promoted catcher Ryan Lavarnway. Lavarnway’s stint on the active roster may be short lived as the Red Sox are expected to activate Lackey on Sunday.
