Spring Training games have not even started and already the Philadelphia Phillies have parted ways with Juan Cruz. Cruz and the Phillies agreed to a minor league deal this winter which would have invited him to Spring Training but the deal was never signed by Cruz.
Subsequently Cruz failed to report to Spring Training on time.
The Phillies and Cruz “mutually parted ways,” GM Ruben Amaro Jr. said Wednesday.
Cruz seemed to have a legitimate shot at making the Phillies bullpen after posting a 2.78 ERA in 35 2/3 innings of work with Pittsburgh in 2012. But, things changed once the Phillies signed Chad Durbin to a guaranteed deal. Amaro says that signing Durbin took away one of the spots Cruz would have been used in.
Cruz will again look to latch onto a team.
