Gregg Popovich getting over NBA Finals loss with pep talk from daughter

Gregg Popovich does not like losing. So losing in the NBA Finals had to be the pits. The Spurs appeared on their way to winning the NBA Championship in Game 6 but went on to lose the final two games in their series against the Miami Heat.

Afterwards the San Antonio Spurs head coach told the San Antonio Express News that he got “lugubrious” or really sad.

Though Popovich said he’s since recovered thanks to a talk from his daughter, Jill.

“OK, Dad, let me get this straight: You won four championships, and you go to a fifth Finals. Other coaches lose all the time. But poor Greggy can’t lose because he’s special. Can you please get over yourself? End of story.”

He stared at her — then started laughing. Hadn’t his daughter told him the same get-over-yourself line he’s told so many others?

“That started me on the path to recovery,” he said.

The Spurs play their first preseason game on Oct 9 and their first regular season game on Oct. 30. For those wondering they do play at Miami in the preseason but the two teams do not meet in the regular season until Jan. 26.

Though something tells me only winning an NBA Championship will really dull the pain of Game 6 for Popovich.
