With Price Fielder traded to the Texas Rangers, it was only a matter of time before the Detroit Tigers confirmed that Miguel Cabrera would move to first base for the 2014 season.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski made the announcement on Wednesday.

This is the first time that the Tigers had confirmed plans to move Cabrera across the diamond. The slugger told a Venezuelan newspaper that he had informed the team that he wanted to change positions after the Fielder trade.

The decision will open up the third base spot for top prospect Nick Castellanos this spring. The Tigers will likely add a veteran option that can come off the bench as insurance.

Cabrera has been a moster at the plate in recent seasons. In 148 games for the Tigers last season Cabrera finished with a .348/.442/.636 line with 44 home runs, and 137 RBI. In 2012 he became the first player to hit for the Triple Crown since 1967.
