San Francisco Giants starter Matt Cain was hammered for nine runs in a loss to St. Louis on Sunday. The Giants ace struggled with his command in an outing that lasted just 3 2/3 innings.

Cain was perfect the first time through the St. Louis Cardinals lineup but fell apart in the fourth inning of a 14-3 loss. The Cardinals had seven hits and two walks in the inning before Cain was finally lifted.

The outing was hardly what the Giants and manager Bruce Bochey wanted to see on a day that they were awarded their World Series rings from last year.

Cain threw six strong innings in his season debut Monday in Los Angeles but today’s outing pushes his ERA to 8.38 and his WHIP to 1.45 for the year. His next outing will be against the Chicago Cubs who lost a series to Atlanta over the weekend.
