Shane Van Gisbergen wins third race of season, Sonoma results

Shane van Gisbergen continued his dominant road course streak with a second straight win — his third in five weeks — after a commanding performance at Sonoma Raceway.

The New Zealander proved once again he’s in a league of his own on road and street courses, leading 97 of 110 laps on Sunday to win from pole. All three of his 2025 victories have come from the top starting spot, tying Jeff Gordon’s NASCAR record for most consecutive road course wins from pole, set between the 1998 and 1999 seasons.

Van Gisbergen’s fourth career Cup Series win — following his stunning 2023 debut victory on the Chicago street course — seemed inevitable even before the teams arrived at the scenic California track. Rivals say “SVG” has a unique braking style developed in Australian V8 Supercars that oval-focused drivers can’t replicate.

His Chicago win prompted a move to the U.S. and a switch to stock car racing with Trackhouse Racing. He and teammate Ross Chastain have sparked new life into the team, with Chastain winning the Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day weekend.

Van Gisbergen is now the fastest driver to reach four Cup Series wins since Parnelli Jones in 1969. His Sonoma victory marks Trackhouse’s fourth win in the last eight weeks. He also finished second from pole in Saturday’s Xfinity Series race.

Despite his dominance, van Gisbergen had to fight for this win. He pitted from the lead with 27 laps to go, then passed Michael McDowell with 19 laps left to retake the front. Two late cautions forced him to defend his lead on restarts, but he held on in his Chevrolet.

Chase Briscoe finished second in a Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, followed by Chase Elliott in a Chevrolet for Hendrick Motorsports. McDowell (Spire Motorsports) was fourth, and Christopher Bell (Joe Gibbs Racing) rounded out the top five.
