The Carolina Panthers continue to reshape their offense, agreeing to terms Sunday night with veteran wide receiver and Clemson legend Hunter Renfrow.
Renfrow, 29, brings a strong track record of production and clutch performances back to the South. A native of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Renfrow was a standout at Clemson, famously catching the game-winning touchdown against Alabama in the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship. He later won the Burlsworth Trophy in 2018, awarded to the nation’s top player who began his career as a walk-on.
After being selected by the Raiders in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft, Renfrow quickly proved himself in the NFL. His best season came in 2021 when he caught 103 passes for 1,038 yards and nine touchdowns, earning his first Pro Bowl selection and helping lead Las Vegas to the playoffs. Across five seasons with the Raiders, he totaled 269 receptions for 2,884 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Renfrow did not play during the 2024 season after being released by the Raiders in March. However, he remained active during the 2023 campaign, appearing in all 17 games (three starts) and posting 25 catches for 255 yards despite dealing with injuries.
In Carolina, Renfrow joins a revamped receiver room featuring veteran Adam Thielen, breakout candidate Jalen Coker, and a pair of first-round picks in Xavier Legette and Tetairoa McMillan. His experience as a reliable slot target should provide second-year quarterback Bryce Young with a valuable security blanket, especially on critical third downs.
Renfrow’s return to the Carolinas is a homecoming for a player who has built his career on perseverance and production. As the Panthers look to take the next step under head coach Dave Canales, adding a seasoned and savvy receiver like Renfrow could prove to be a key move.
