Austin Hill wins Xfinity race at Martinsville, US Marine Corps 250 Results

Austin Hill won what can only be called a shock win after he came from seventh on a green white checkered to win the US Marine Corps 250 at Martinsville Speedway.

The race began with Connor Zilisch and Carson Kvapil in an all JR Motorsports front row. Aric Almirola began the race 15th but started making progress though the field in the first stage moving to sixth by the time the first caution came out on lap 54. That incident was for contact between Corey Day and Harrison Burton. Both cars would take damage but continue. Zilisch would win the first stage under caution.

Brandon Jones would win the race off pit road with Justin Allgaier following behind him. Garrett Smithley would spin off turn four on lap 81 to bring out the second caution. As Jones and Zilisch tried to slow they made contact giving damage to Jones’ left rear and Zilisch’s right front. Zilisch would lead the restart but Allgaier would get by him in short order before Dean Thompson spun on lap 95. Zilisch would regain the lead after pitstops as Almirola and Algaier began to carve their way though the field on new tires. Zilisch would win the second stage.

Almirola would lead the field for the start of the third stage. The fifth caution of the day came out when the splitter and undertray of Harrison Burton’s car was ripped off following contact with Thomas Annunziata. Contact between Sam Mayer and Kvapil for 11th would bring out a caution on 154. Following pit strategy Christian Eckes would move to the front of the field. Zilisch’s day would go away when he spun from 17th taking on heavy damage to his car.

Sheldon Creed would move up to second behind Taylor Gray on lap 185. Shortly after Carson Ware would spin. Later Burton would spin to bring out another caution and then Greg Van Alst would stall on the front stretch to bring out yet another yellow out. The yellows were not done as Dean Thompson spun again and just after the restart for that yellow Kvapil would spin following contact from Love to which both drivers were upset with one another.

Eckes, Daniel Dye and Nick Sanchez would all be involved in an incident with 18 to go. The incident appeared to start after Eckes received contact with Sam Mayer. A red flag would come out for track cleanup. The 13th caution would come shortly after the restart as William Sawalich spun Zilisch. Jeremy Clements would also take damage.

Sammy Smith would snatch the lead on the restart but the race would not end as Matt DiBenedetto would keep the cautions flowing. In overtime Gray would repay Smith for contact on the last restart which gave the lead to the No. 8 car. Gray appeared to be in position for a win before Smith late braked into the final set of corners knocking Gray out of the way. Smith then received contact from Allgaier as Hill snuck though to claim the win. Hill began the overtime period in seventh and led only one lap in the race but collects the $100,000 Dash 4 Cash and the 100th win of Richard Childress Racing.
