The Washington Commanders are making moves to strengthen their offensive firepower, re-signing veteran tight end Zach Ertz to a one-year, $6.25 million contract. The deal includes an additional $2.75 million in incentives, making it a solid payday for the 34-year-old, who proved last season that he still has plenty left in the tank.
Ertz, coming off an injury-plagued 2023 campaign, rebounded impressively last year, posting his highest yardage total since 2021. He quickly became a reliable target for rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, functioning as the team’s No. 2 weapon in a depleted offense. However, Washington has taken steps to ensure that Ertz won’t have to shoulder such a heavy load in 2025. With Terry McLaurin continuing as the team’s top receiving threat and the recent acquisition of Deebo Samuel via trade, Ertz will now slot in as the clear third option in the passing game.
While he remains a dependable target, Ertz has evolved into more of a “catch-and-fall” specialist at this stage of his career, limiting his yards-after-catch ability. That shift, combined with the increased competition for targets, may make it difficult for him to replicate last season’s low-end TE1 fantasy production. However, in the right matchups, he should still provide value as a reliable safety valve for Daniels.
The Commanders may not be done making moves on the offensive side of the ball, as last season exposed their lack of depth at the skill positions. With free agency and the draft still in play, Washington could continue adding pieces to support their young quarterback. But for now, bringing back a savvy veteran like Ertz ensures stability and experience in the passing game as the Commanders aim to take a step forward in 2025.
