Santino Ferrucci began the day on the pole but was passed on the opening lap by Will Power. Before the first lap was completed Scott Dixon crashed out of the race following contact from Pietro Fittipaldi. The crash has ended Dixon’s hopes for a seventh IndyCar crown. Fittipaldi would be given a penalty.
Fittipaldi and Conor Daly would come together on lap 23 but both drivers were able to keep going. With the contact Fittipaldi would get his second drive though penalty of the day.
Past the midway point, Romain Grosjean would make contact with Christian Rasmussen and then turn directly in front of traffic two times in his damaged machine.
