Marlins unwilling to trade Stanton or McGehee highlights closeness of races

The Miami Marlins are six games out in the NL East but that does not mean that they are willing to trade start Giancarlo Stanton.

While teams and fans have long awaited Stanton’s exit for the Marlins, it will not be happening this year according to general manager Dan Jennings.

In fact the Marlins also want everyone to know that All-Star final vote candidate Casey McGehee is staying as well.

“He ain’t going nowhere, either,” Jennings told USA TODAY Sports.

The Marlins are three games under .500 on the season but just six games behind division leading Atlanta. And all that is before we get into the Wild Card scenarios.

With teams rising and falling so quickly more teams are considering themselves as playoff contenders this season meaning that early trades such as the one that sent pitchers Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel from the Chicago Cubs to the Oakland Athetlics may be the highlight of MLB’s yearly trading frenzy in July.

Consider this. A week ago Toronto was the toast of the AL East. Now they have lost five in a row, fallen to second and sudden Tampa Bay is just 9.5 back and surging. Teams are turning to the idea of if there was enough time to fall that far back, surely there is enough time to catch back up.
