David Ortiz is only seeking a one-year extension on his current contract according to WEEI.com writer Rob Bradford.
Ortiz raised some eye browls earlier this week when he said that he could leave Boston if he does not get an extension from the Red Sox.
“We’re good. We’re good. We talked, they’re talking and I just asked for one year. I didn’t ask for anything crazy. It wasn’t like I asked for a five-year deal. It’s a one-year extension I asked for,” Ortiz said of his talks with the Red Sox.
Ortiz is under contract for the 2014 season. He will be finishing out the second year of a contract that increased in value to $30 million after he avoided the disabled last season.
“We had a conversation, they’re outlining what they plan on doing and they’re going to come back to me with their answer at some point. … Everything is going well. We had a great conversation. They are happy about what we talked about. I don’t even know why people are spreading bad rumors.”
Ortiz has done this for a few years now. Expect the Red Sox to work something out with him before Spring Training. There’s virtually no way he leaves Boston.
