Giants hoping to be in market for Masahiro Tanaka and Jose Abreu

The San Francisco Giants have noticed other teams in their division, notable the Dodgers, success in the foreign markets and are believed to have interest in both Masahiro Tanaka and Jose Abreu.

Tanaka, 24, throws in the upper 90s and is expected to be posted by the Rakuten Golden Eagles when the season ends. Currently he is 18-0 with a 1.15 ERA for the Golden Eagles but translating those numbers to the major leagues has also proven to be a difficult task for scouts.

Another international player the Giants are targeting is first baseman Jose Abreu. The 26-year-old Abreu could command an annual salary doubles the seven-year $42 million that the Dodgers gave to Yasiel Puig.

“The risk and cost assessment has to be part of the equation,” Giants vice president Bobby Evans told CSN Bay Area. “As for the rewards, you do look at what some of these recent high-risk signings have done. It does give you a sense of `This is the potential.’

There figures to be no shortage of teams interested in Abreu or Tanaka and ultimately both will go to the highest bigger.
