Freddy Garcia pitched six innings without allowing a hit in his first start of the 2013 season but the Orioles needed extra innings to defeat the Angels on Saturday.
Garcia’s final line was 6 2/3 innings in which he allowed two runs on three hits and a walk. The right hander struck out one before being replaced by Darren O’Day. Garcia’s hopes of picking up his first win of the year were dashed when the Angles scored two off of O’Day in the eighth.
The Orioles jumped out to a lead in the first inning courtesy of Manny Machado’s fourth home run of the year. An inning later J.J. Hardy hit his fourth. Outfielder Nolan Reimold hit a sac-fly in the fifth to score Machado before hitting a home run in the seventh.
Erik Aybar singled to start the seventh inning for the Angles and two batters later Mark Trumbo connected for this eighth home run of the year cutting the Orioles lead in half. In the eighth Hank Conger scored on a ground out and a batter later Trout drove in Scott Cousins to tie the game up at four.
In the tenth the Orioles were able to score a run when Steven Pearce singled in Reimold. Jim Johnson would pitch the bottom of the inning picking up his 11th save of the year.
