You can add Roger Staubach to the list of people who feel Jerry Jones’ time as the general manager of the Dallas Cowboys should end. Jones recently said that the team was structured with him to be the general manager and that he could never see a situation where he was not the “final decision-maker.”
“Jerry is trying real hard,” Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach said Friday on the Mike & Mike Show on ESPN Radio. “He goes back to the old days when they won three Super Bowls. I think the formula is he’s got to find a medium ground and delegate more authority.”
The Cowboys (3-5) play at Philadelphia this weekend in a game that has been built as a must win for both teams. Staubach believes a loss on Sunday will only intensify the cries of those calling for Jones to step aside.
“If they’re out of it this year, he’ll continue to get more and more criticism as far as how he’s handling the team,” Staubach said. “It’s his team. He owns the team. He’s passionate about it, and I can’t tell him what to do. So I’m just a big Cowboys fan and hoping for the best.”
Staubach also spoke positively of head coach Jason Garrett.
“Jason Garrett is going to be a heckuva NFL coach, but right now he’s getting the brunt of it,” Staubach said. “If you go back to Belichick and even Coach (Tom) Landry at the beginning of their careers, it wasn’t always hunky-dory.
The Cowboys cling to the slightest of playoff hopes. In recent seasons 10-6 and 9-7 have been enough to earn a playoff birth but in order to reach those records the Cowboys would need to run the table.
