Drew Brees, quarterback for the New Orleans Saints went into tonight’s game against the 3-1 San Diego Chargers tied with Johnny Unitas’ 47 consecutive game touchdown record.
Bress connected with Devrey Henderson on a 40 yard touch down pass to break the record. Unitas’ record had stood for 52 years. Bress started his streak late in the 2009 season.
The touchdown came against the San Diego Chargers. Brees was drafted by San Diego in 2001 and played there through the 2005 season. Bress joined the Saints in 2006.
The Saints entered the game 0-4 while general manager Mickey Loomis, head coach Sean Payton and interim head coach Joe Vitt serve suspensions due to the bounty gate scandal. Brees asked and received permission from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to have them present for the event.
Earlier in the week Joe Unitas, son of Johnny Unitas, sent Brees a letter of encouragement. In the letter he praised Brees for being a “role model.” He said that “records “were meant to be broken” and that his father would wish for Brees to break the record.
Brees entered the game with 10 touchdown passes on the season.
