Update: SHR is denying that an announcement is coming this week. SHR spokesman Mike Arning said in an email to Bob Pockrass that “Stewart-Haas Racing continues to negotiate with one driver and one driver only for the #39 car, and that driver is Ryan Newman” via Sporting News
Tony Stewart said that the Army leaving was a huge blow but not something that Stewart Haas Racing (SHR) couldn’t recover from and by the looks of it, they are working towards just that.
Ryan Newman, driver of the No.39 U.S Army Chevrolet fielded by Stewart Haas Racing (SHR) is said to be signing back with SHR.
In a post about who will drive the No.22 Ford Fusion in 2013, Lee Spencer of FoxSports said that Newman is likely to stay with SHR with more sponsorship from Quicken Loans and that an official announcement could come as soon as next week.
After concerns of the ARMY pulling out of NASCAR, it was undetermined if SHR would be able to find sponsorship for Newman. When asked if Newman had considered returning to Penske Racing, he said he had not talked to Roger Penske and that he was 100% focused on staying at SHR.
Stewart said he would like to have Newman back, but only if they found sponsorship.
In a time that even top tier teams are struggling to find sponsorship, Stewart was looking for the golden egg, but it is not surprising to see Quicken Loan step up to sponsor more races for Newman; since they have been a primary sponsor on the No.39 multiple times this season.
Newman also has been sponsored by Outback Steakhouse, but no word on if they will increase their number of races or even be on the car at all.
