Austin Dillion to drive in CUP full time in 2014

Austin Dillion, driver of the No.3  AdvoCare/Bass Pro Shops/American Ethanol Chevrolet Impala drives full-time for Richard Childress Racing (RCR) in the NASCAR Nationwide Series.

The cowboy hat wearing kiddo will be making his drive to cup shortly, but not after another full year in the Nationwide Series. “What we’re looking for next year is running the full Nationwide Series again and having about seven Cup races is what we’re hoping to get done. If we can put it all together, it’s gonna be a great year,” Dillon said during an appearance.

What did he have to say about this year? “This year has been awesome – we had one Cup race [finished 24th at Michigan in June in the #33 Chevy] and the radio blew up. Hopefully we’ll finish this year out with a championship, so next year is just a lot of fun.”

Dillion, the son of former general manager, Mike Dillion and grandson of Richard Childress, has racing in his blood.

Dillion won Rookie of the Year in 2010 and the Craftsman Truck Series championship in 2011. This is his first full year in the Nationwide Series, Dillion has 15 top tens, which 11 of them were top fives and a win to account for thus far.

Dillion made his Sprint Cup Series debut in 2011 at Kansas Motor speedway. He finished 26th in that race. The only Cup race he ran this year was at Michigan where he finished in 24th position. But, don’t expect to see Dillion anymore this season, as of right now they have no plans to run anymore Cup races until next year when there plan will be seven. “It might change day-to-day. My grandfather comes up with things.” Dillion said.

It is the same schedule that Ricky Stenhouse Jr. has followed, 2 full seasons in Nationwide and then a move to Cup. Stenhouse Jr. will be making his move to Cup in 2013 for Roush Fenway Racing.

After Austin Dillion leaves for cup you can look for brother Ty Dillion to be in the Nationwide car full time, but what number will he use? “Right now, I’m running the ‘3’ in the Truck Series and having a lot of fun with it – with all the fans and seeing how excited they get. Last year, in the ARCA Series, I won the championship with the ’41’. That number is dear to me and is also that my grandfather started out racing at Bowman-Gray Stadium. That means a lot to me, too, as much as the ‘3’ does. Since Austin has started out taking the number ‘3’ and made it his own, eventually the ’41’ will be my number.
Dillion currently drives the famed No.3, but it is still uncertain if he will take that number to the Cup Series when he goes in 2014. Although there have been talks, there has been no official announcement.
