AJ Allmendinger and Penske Racing have requested the B sample of his specimen from Kentucky be tested. The A sample of this test turned up positive for a banned substance and he was subsequently taken out of the #22 car for Saturday’s race at Daytona.
Sam Hornish replaced Allmendinger in Saturday nights race and finished 33rd. Hornish has been announced as the driver for this weekends race at New Hampshire.
It was reported by many that Allmendinger had until noon Tuesday to formally request the sample be tested. The driver and Penske Racing can request additional parties be present for the testing of the B sample.
Team owner Roger Penske implied that the B sample would be tested prior to the IndyCar race in Toronto on Sunday. He also called the failed test by Allmendinger “a disappointment” but offered few other words.
Allmendinger is currently on a one year deal driving the #22 Dodge. He previously had driven for Richard Petty Motorsports and Red Bull Racing. He was cited for a DUI in 2009.
While some may question the reasons for Allmendinger’s request for the B sample to be tested look no further then the case of MLB player Ryan Braun who tested positive for a banned substance and was suspended for 50 games. Following an appeal Braun’s suspension was overturned by an arbitrator after it was ruled that proper procedure for specimen collection was not followed.
If the B sample also tests positive and no error can be found then Allmendinger’s career in Sprint Cup could be over.
While he has yet to win on the NASCAR circuit the California born driver was part of Michael Shank Racing’s victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona this year. He also won 5 races during the 2006 Cart series season, finishing 3rd in the overall standings. He had ran 169 races at the NASCAR Sprint Cup level.
