Marcos Ambrose is in the midst of his best string of races in his NASCAR career. The driver of the #9 Ford for Richard Petty Motorsports sat on the pole at Michigan with alap north of 203 mph and led early in the contest before finishing 9th. It marked the second top-10 in three races for the Australian born driver who has only one finish lower then 14th in his last six starts.
Ambrose heads to the road course in Sonoma, California, this weekend fresh off the first pole of his Sprint Cup career.
Last year Ambrose qualified 8th for Sonoma and finished 5th. A few weeks later he would win at Watkins Glen for his first victory in the Sprint Cup Series.
In his last three races in Sonoma he has finished 3rd, 6th and 5th.
Of course until now the moment comes to mind when it’s Marcos Ambrose and Sonoma is his ill fated sixth place run in 2010.
While under caution for reasons no one are sure of Ambrose shut off his engine in an apparent effort to conserve fuel. That is fine and dandy until Ambrose lost speed, came to a stop and was then passed by a handful of cars.
“I should have had the motor cranked up and it wouldn’t have ever been an issue,” Ambrose said after the race. “Terrible way to finish.”
Ambrose is currently 17th in the NASCAR standings.
