In the last three seasons the St. Louis Rams have went from 3 wins, to 2, and finished this year 1-15. Much of the blame could be directed at quarterback Marc Bulger who is an obvious exit from the team thanks to a salary of $8.5 million in 2010.
It may seem years ago but Bulger was a pro bowler as recently as 2006 and while his play has fallen off a cliff since then some of the blame should atleast be pointed at the Rams shabby supporting cast.
Bulger jumped into the lime light in St. Louis with help form injuries to Kurt Warner. Those Ram teams were loaded offensively and Bulger thrived putting up big numbers and earning a large contract.
Truth is Bulger never deserved as much credit as he got and doesn’t deserve as much of the blame for the Rams downside as he’s getting.
That Bulger is considering retiring probably has more to do with frustration of losing and the fact that he knows he won’t be a guaranteed to be a starter for any team next season.
After three straight seasons in which his QB rating was above 90 he’s seen a dip to 70.3, 71.4 and 70.7 in the last three.
Veteran Kyle Boller (two starts) and rookie Keith Null (four starts) hardly distinguished themselves replacing Bulger over the final six games. So with Bulger out of town, and Boller with a chance to follow that would leave Null and Mike Reilly as the only quarterbacks on the roster.
As a side note: The Rams, who have been mentioned as a potential landing spot for Michael Vick if he doesn’t remain in Philadelphia, also hold the No. 1 pick of the 2010 draft.
With the number of teams in the league, and GM’s always looking to improve at the QB position it would be no surprise to see Bulger on the sidelines or even in games in 2010.
