Mike Shanahan could become an option to coach Bears

Mike Shanahan’s run in Washington did not work out.

Shanahan was paid to sit at home this year after the Redskins front office pushed him out following a disastrous season with Robert Griffin in 2013. The problems for Griffin did not end once Shanahan left but alas that is fodder for another story.

Now Shanahan could quickly reemerge as the head coach of the Bears working with the only quarterback who has been picked off – and picked off – more than Griffin.

CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora reports Shanahan “has very strong interest” to work with Jay Cutler again and could become an option for the Chicago Bears. Shanahan is believed to be considering a return to the NFL only if there is a reasonable chance to win the Super Bowl.

Given the Bears lofty praises earlier this year this would appear to be one situation. It does not hurt that Shanahan – a known control freak – would be moving in with an organization which appears set to completely clean house in the front office.

The Bears surely would have loved to had gotten a crack at Jim Harbuagh during his exit from San Francisco but it looks like he is heading back to the college game to coach his alma mater in Michigan.
