After weeks of reports that the Minnesota Vikings were looking to distance themselves from running back Adrian Peterson, ESPN’s Chris Mortensen reported on NFL Insiders that it’s “very possible” the running back returns before the end of the season.

If Mortensen’s report is correct then the Vikings have softened their stance on Peterson.

With fresh legs, Peterson would move rookie running back Jerick McKinnon to the role of a change-of-pace back. With a plea deal looming there is no way to interpret which way this one will go. It also remains to be seen how much a 29-year-old Peterson could help anyone after being out since Week 1.

In 2013 he appeared in 14 games totaling 1266 yards and 10 touchdowns producing a 4.5 average per carry.
