The Dallas Cowboys have waived defensive end Michael Sam according to the teams official website.

Sam joined the Cowboys on Sept. 3 and spen the first seven weeks of the season on the teams 10-man practice squad. Sam never made it to the Cowboys 53-man game day roster.

The first openly-gay player in the NFL, Sam was a seventh round pick of the St. Louis Rams but was unable to make their roster and was cut at the end of the preseason.

Sam’s practice squad spot will go to linebacker Troy Davis who worked out for the Cowboys on Monday.

This is the first substantial report on Sam since the Cowboys signed him.
