Michael Sam has been signed to the practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys.
Sam, the 2013 SEC Defensive Player of the Year, was drafted in the Sixth-round by the St. Louis Rams but failed to make the teams 53-man roster.
“It’s been a roller coaster this past week, but I’m happy where I’m at now,” Sam said via Mail Online. “I’m just looking forward to being a Cowboy. My focus is on making the team.”
While Sam was not able to stick as a member of a Rams team which has tremendous depth at defensive line he offers an improvement on a Cowboys defense which is thin across the board.
Sa recorded three sacks and 11 tackles this preseason. He is not expected to play in Week 1 but when he does he will become the first openly gay player to play in a regular season game.
