Matt Cassel favorite to be Vikings starter in Week 1

Matt Cassel was re-signed this offseason by the Minnesota Vikings. While the team traded up to draft Teddy Bridgewater at the end of the first round, it still appears that Cassel is at the top of the depth chart.

According to an on-air report from ESPN’s Britt McHenry “it appears right now” that Cassel would be the “starter to open the season.”

The news is not all too surprising. It had long been suspected that the Vikings would give Cassel a chance to move the chains early on before shifting to Brigewater as the starter. Obviously starting with Cassel and going to Brigewater is a better long term solution than the other way around.

Cassel is expected to play the entire first half of Saturday’s second preseason game against Arizona. One player not expected to play in that game is running back Adrian Peterson.
