Rod Marinelli says Cowboys defensive players need “career year”

The Dallas Cowboys defense was last or near the bottom in nearly every defensive statistic last season. Sean Lee has already been ruled out for the season and gone is DeMarcus Ware.

Things could be even worse in Dallas this season leaving new defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli to state the obvious.

“We just got to get guys to have career years,” Marinelli said, via Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News. “I think you set standards for men. If you don’t set standards, you certainly won’t reach them. If I put a ceiling on them and say, ‘This is all I expect of you,’ that’s all you’ll get.

“I take the ceiling off. I want every guy to have a career year. That’s how I do it.”

Needless to say the Cowboys need big things out of draftee DeMarcus Lawrence and free agent additions Henry Melton, Terrell McClain and Jeremy Mincey.

The Cowboys defense may be too much even for Marinelli to overcome.
