Cowboys promote Rod Marinelli to defensive coordinator, hire Scott Linehan

The Dallas Cowboys have promoted Rod Marinelli to the defensive coordinator role.

Former defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin has been demoted to an assistant head coach role. These moves come just eight days after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said nothing had changed with his coordinators.

This is the right move for the Cowboys after Kiffin’s defense finished near the bottom or last in just about every defensive statistic in 2013. Marinelli should have been hired as the Cowboys defensive coordinator a year ago after he left the Bears.

Marinelli runs the same Tampa 2 defense employed by Kiffin but has had more success of late then his former boss.

The Cowboys have also hired former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator as their “passing game coordinator.” In short its a way of keep Bill Callahan from getting out of his contract. Linehan will be calling the plays for the Cowboys.
