After losing seasons in three of his four years in Washington, head coach Mike Shanahan has been fired.

The Redskins hired Shanahan hoping for a return to their glory days. They got a dysfunctional locker room and a bunch of defeats. During his tenure with the Redskins Shanahan matched predecessors Jim Zorn and Steve Spurrier by going 24-40.

“We are going to take a smart, step-by-step approach to finding the right coach to return the Redskins to where we believe we should be,” general manager Bruce Allen said in the team release. “We will analyze accurately and honestly all of the decisions that were made over the past year.”

The Redskins will be left on the hook for Shanahan’s $7 million salary as well as the salaries of many of his assistants.
