Trent Richardson may no longer be at the top of the depth chart for the Indianapolis Colts at running back but he still fits into their long term plan.

The Colts pulled the trigger on a trade with the Cleveland Browns to get Richardson. After weeks of struggling the Colts sent him to the bench in favor of Donald Brown. While it would be easy to chalk the trade for Richardson as a misstep the Colts continue to speak up the future contributions he can offer them.

“It was always a long-term thing,” coach Chuck Pagano said Friday, via the Indy Star. “Seventy-two hours after he got traded he was playing in a game for us. But it was never just about today.”

The Colts have told Richardson the same thing.

“When I talked to all the coaches around here,” Richardson said this week, “they’ve told me, ‘We’re in it for the long haul. You don’t have to worry about going nowhere. Go ahead and buy your house.’ ”

For those wondering the Colts owe Richardson $6.602 million for nearly three full seasons.
