The Kansas City Chiefs are privately concerned about the foot of running back Jamaal Charles according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

On Monday, Schefter reported on SportsCenter that the Chiefs are “hoping for the best but bracing for the worst.”

The Chiefs will have Charles undergo an MRI even as X-rays came back negative. Charles has been diagnosed with a strained foot thus far but it is unknown the severity of it or any time table for his return.

Charles will likely undergo a Monday MRI to determine the full extent. X-rays confirmed Charles avoided a fracture, but a mid-foot sprain could cost him a lot of time. The full damage has yet to be formally revealed.

The Chiefs figure to give Charles the week off and it is highly unlikely they would risk him in Friday’s preseason game against San Francisco.

Charles is coming off a season that saw him record 1,509 yards on the ground with five touchdowns. He also caught 35 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown.
