Bears’ Trestman will not commit to Devin Hester as WR

Devin Hester contemplated retirement after the Bears season ended and head coach Lovie Smith was fired. Later the 30-year-old suggested he could seek a trade.

New head coach Marc Trestman is undecided what role Hester will play on the Bears in 2013.

“Right now, he is back. He’ll go out there and compete to be our returner. What he does beyond that depends on how he performs in that first role as a returner.”

General manager Phil Emery echoed those comments.

“He’ll compete to be our returner,” Emery said Thursday from the 2013 NFL Scouting Combine, via the Chicago Sun-Times. “What he does beyond that depends on how he performs in that first role as a returner.”

There would not appear to be a huge market for Hester. Hester’s base salary and workout bonus total $2.1 million while his cap number is $2.9 million.
