The San Francisco Giants are out of the playoff picture and thus have opted to shut down pitcher Madison Bumgarner and second baseman Marco Scutaro.

Bumgarnder had recently topped 200 innings pitched and while he was healthy the Giants are playing it safe with a week left in the season. The left handed Bumgarner will finish the year with a 2.77 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 199 strikeouts. Barry Zito will start for the Giants on Wednesday.

Scutaro is being shut down after the team determined he had not made enough progress with his injured left ring finger. Scutaro will be healthy for spring training. Scutaro will finish 2013 with a .297/.357/.369 line with two home runs and 57 runs scored in 127 games.
