Cincinnati Reds pitcher Wade Miley has been accused in court documents of supplying drugs to former Los Angeles Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs, who died from an accidental overdose in 2019.
According to a deposition, Skaggs’ former agent, Ryan Hamill, said Skaggs admitted in 2013 to using oxycodone-laced pain pills allegedly provided by Miley. The conversation reportedly occurred after Hamill and Skaggs’ parents confronted him about his erratic behavior.
This deposition is part of a wrongful death lawsuit filed by Skaggs’ family against the Angels in California. Separately, former Angels public relations staffer Eric Kay was convicted in Texas for supplying the fentanyl-laced pills that contributed to Skaggs’ death. Kay is serving a 22-year federal prison sentence.
Skaggs died in a hotel room in a Dallas suburb hours before a scheduled game between the Angels and the Texas Rangers.
Miley, 38, has not been charged with any crimes. His name previously surfaced during Kay’s sentencing, when prosecutors played a recorded conversation in which Kay claimed Miley had also provided drugs to Skaggs.
Former MLB pitcher Matt Harvey, a 2019 teammate of Skaggs, testified during Kay’s trial that he also gave Skaggs drugs. Harvey was later suspended 60 days for violating MLB’s drug policy and never returned to the majors. He and three other players also testified about receiving pills from Skaggs and witnessing drug use on the team.
Skaggs and Miley were teammates on the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2012 and 2013.
Miley signed a one-year contract with the Reds on June 4 and has made two starts since. He had Tommy John surgery on his left elbow in May 2024 and originally joined the Reds on a minor league deal in February. He exercised an opt-out clause after not making the majors by June 1 but ultimately re-signed with Cincinnati.
The Reds declined to comment, and Miley has not publicly responded to the allegations.
