The Baltimore Orioles are expected to activate catcher Matt Wieters on June 4 when he is first eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list.
Wieters had Tommy John surgery to reconstruct a ligament in his right elbow last June and has been rehabbing at extended spring training but when he return next month he may not be a regular in the lineup initially.
“I was only going to catch him about four out of seven [days] anyway. But we may do an every-other-day thing with him,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “We’ll see how it goes. Today was a good step for him. … Let me get to the fourth first. That’s what I’m OK with. Having Matt every other day is better than not having him at all. And I think that will progress from there.”
For now the Orioles will continue to start Caleb Jospeh at catcher. Jospeh is hitting a surprising .284/.379/.457 with three home runs in 25 games.
