Braves add Rene Rivera via waiver claim, give up nothing

The Braves claimed catcher Rene Rivera off waivers from the Angels. Instead of working out any sort of deal, the Angels simply let the veteran go to the Braves.

With the Angels letting Rivera go, the Braves take on the roughly $500k still owed to the veteran known primarily for his defense. Though 30 games this season Rivera owns a .244/.287/.439 line with four homers and 11 RBI.

The move for Rivera is short-sighted. It allows the Braves to use Tyler Flowers or Kurt Suzuki in a pinch hit role by having three catchers on the roster.

Rivera has previously seen time with the Mariners, Twins, Padres, Rays, Mets and Cubs in addition to the Angels.
