Mariners add Cameron Rupp on minor league deal

Former Phillies catcher Cameron Rupp has joined the Mariners on a minor league deal.

Rupp, 29, gives the Mariners some depth at Triple-A Tacoma. In parts of five seasons with the Phillies, Rubb hit 39 career home runs including 30 over his last two seasons totaling 193 games.

Prior to joining the Mariners, Rupp has spent this season playing between Triple-A Round Rock and Rochester, the minor league affiliates of the Rangers and Twins.

Given Rupp’s big league experience and pop, there is a chance he ends up as the backup to Mike Zunino. By all accounts Zunino’s ankle will be fine to start the second half.
