Brewers sign Christian Bethancourt to minor league deal

The Brewers have signed Christian Bethancourt to a minor league deal. Bethancourt, 26, will also receive an invitation to spring training with the big league club.

A season ago the Padres attempted to turn the catcher into a relief pitcher but things did not go well. Bethancourt was 1-for-7 at the plate and had a 14.73 ERA in his four games totalling 3 2/3 innings on the mound. Pitching at Triple-A El Paso, Bethancourt had a 8.21 ERA in 34 games with a WHIP of 1.99.

Judging from the way the Brewers tweet labeled Bethancourt as a catcher it appears they will not entertain his abilities to pitch. The Brewers do however have experience carrying players who both pitched and hit, most notably Brooks Kieschnick who was with the team in 2003 and 2004.
