The Nationals will acquire shortstop Yunel Escobar from the Athletics for reliever Tyler Clippard.

Escobar was just traded to the Athletics last week from the Rays.

The 29-year-old Clippard had a 2.18 ERA and 82/23 K/BB ratio in 70 1/3 innings for the Nationals. Now arriving in Oakland he could move into their closer role.

Ian Desmond’s name has been floated in trade talks for months so acquiring Esocar could free the Nationals up to move him or allow the team to play him at second base.

Rockies avoid arbitration with Chatwood

The Rockies have avoided arbitration with right hander Tyler Chatwood reaching agreement on a two-year deal.

Chatwood was limited to just 24 innings last season while dealing with injuries but should once again move into the Rockies rotation this spring. He had a 3.15 ERA in 20 starts during the 2013 season.
