The San Francisco Giants have placed Matt Can on the 15-day disabled list with elbow inflammation.
Cain, 29, has had a rough season going 2-7 with a 4.18 ERA in 90 1/3 innings of work this season. The Giants will have Yusmeiro Petit pitch in his place for Tuesday’s game against Philadelphia.
While Cain could return from the disabled list in a few days, as his placement is retroactive to July 11, the Giants have yet to provide any timetable.
With Cain going to the DL, the Giants have recalled George Kontos.
Kontos has thrown 14 2/3 innings of relief for the Giants this season posting a 3.07 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. The 29-year-old’s call-up is thanks in part to Petit being moved into the rotation.
The Giants also placed Brandon Belt on the 7-day concussion disabled list. He was struck by a ball on Saturday. Adam Duvall has been called up to take his roster space. Duvall is hitting .303/.361/.626 with 26 home runs this season at Triple-A Fresno.
