Rockies owner: “Maybe Denver doesn’t deserve a franchise”

Colorado Rockies owner Dick Monfort is not looking good in the court of public opinion after his response to a unidentified season ticket holder.

The ticket holder sent sent a email to the Rockies via their online submission box writing “The Monforts have no business owning a baseball team and their missteps in hiring ‘the good old boys’ for front office and management positions is solid evidence of their ineptitude. They have ruined pro baseball in this region while generating millions of dollars in profit.”

That led to Monfort responding with “By the way you talk maybe Denver doesn’t deserve a franchise, maybe time for it to find a new home. Thanks.”

CBS4 in Colorado has confirmed the comments with Monfort who said he remembered sending the comment to the fan.

“I sort of remember,” said Monfort. “I do remember that. I was rapid firing it.”

And while he talked tough, he is now playing the PR face game.

“I don’t even have an idea what I meant to say,” said Monfort. “What I meant to say was maybe we, the owners, don’t deserve a franchise.”

The Rockies are 14 games under .500 on the season. Their last winning season came in 2010.
