Rangers sign free agent Carlos Pena

Carlos Pena was released this spring by the Los Angeles Angels and has been searching for work since. On Tuesday the veteran signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers.

Pena, 36, hit just .207/.321/.346 with eight homers over 89 games for he Kansas City Royals and Houston Astros last season.

Given the loss of Prince Fielder and Mitch Moreland at first base the Rangers are desperate for bodies. Donnie Murphy has been seeing time at first and despite his two home run effort on Monday he’s a career .215 hitter with little power.

Hovering at .500 on the season it would come as no surprise if the Rangers called Pena up quickly.
