Unable to sign Samardzija to a long-term contract extension, the Cubs have been fielding offers for Samardzija since the winter. The Cubs are reported to have asked for Jason Heyward from the Braves when the two teams spoke during the winter. Whether or not their demands have changed are unclear.

Though 14 starts Samardzija has a sparkling 2.77 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP with a 82/26 K/BB ratio.
Acquiring Samardzija could mean that Tim Lincecum would head to the bullpen.
