Rays claim Angel Sanchez off waivers from Marlins

angelsanchezA year ago Angel Sanchez was considered the highlight of a trade package that sent Ricky Nolasco to the Los Angeles Dodgers. A few days ago he was placed on waivers.

The Tampa Bay Rays claimed the 24-year-old pitcher and have assigned him to Double-A.

In eight starts at that level this season Sanchez has posted an uninspiring 0-8 record to go with a 6.88 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP. Obviously the Rays are hoping that a change of scenery could help them catch lighting in a bottle.

Given Sanchez’s career 4.93 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 341/159 K/BB ratio its unlikely.

The Marlins will use Sanchez’s spot on the 40-man roster to activate Rafael Furcal.
